Percentages are everywhere: discounts, tips, taxes, grades, interest, elections, and phone batteries. One percent is simply a number out of 100 - 20 % means 20 per 100, or 0.20 as a decimal, or 1/5 as a fraction. All three forms say the same thing, and switching fluently between them is the whole skill. This guide covers the three calculations everyone needs - "X % of Y", "X is what % of Y", and percent change - with complete reference tables for every whole percent, worked examples to copy, the classic mistakes, and answers to what people actually search. Read it once and no percent sign scares you again.

How to use the Percentage Calculator

  1. Clarify the question: "X % of Y" (part of an amount), "X is what % of Y" (share), or "change from X to Y" (growth or shrink).
  2. Enter both numbers above in the calculator on the tool page.
  3. Read the result, then check against the complete tables below - estimate first, then compute; that is how pros avoid dumb mistakes.

Formula

X % of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y  ·  What % = part ÷ whole × 100  ·  Change % = (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100

Key concepts, explained

Percent, decimal, and fraction are one idea

25 % = 0.25 = 1/4. Converting by eye is the master key: percent to decimal moves the point two places left (25 % → 0.25); decimal to percent two right (0.25 → 25 %). Fractions help you see: 50 % is a half, 33.3 % a third, 25 % a quarter, 20 % a fifth, 10 % a tenth.

Why three forms? Decimals multiply cleanly, fractions show structure, percents communicate. "20 % raise" beats "1.2× salary" in the headline; 1.2× wins in the spreadsheet.

"Of" always means times

In "20 % of 150", "of" becomes ×: 0.20 × 150 = 30. This one rule dissolves most confusion, including chained percents: "20 % off, then 10 % off" is ×0.8 ×0.9 = ×0.72, i.e. 28 % off - not 30 %. Percents multiply; they never simply add (unless they share the same base, which is what signs hope).

Percentage points vs. percent

A rate rising from 10 % to 12 % gains 2 percentage points but grows 20 % in relative terms. Politics quotes points, investors quote percent - know which game is on. The same trap lives in polls ("plus 3 points") and rate news ("rates plus 0.5 points").

Undoing a percent change

After +20 % you do NOT get back with −20 %: $100 → $120 → minus 20 % = $96, not $100. Undoing ×1.2 means ÷1.2 (or ×0.8333). Generally: undo "±p %" by dividing by (1 ± p/100). This asymmetry bites in discounts, recoveries ("stocks need +100 % to recoup −50 %"), and currencies.

Stacked discounts multiply, never add

Thirty percent off followed by twenty percent off is forty-four percent off total, not fifty: the second discount bites the already-reduced price by multiplication (0.7 × 0.8 = 0.56). Stores advertise stacked because addition intuition systematically overrates deals. Clearance plus coupon plus loyalty points combine identically everywhere.

CAGR: growth rates that compare fairly

Compound annual growth smooths bumpy multi-year growth into one comparable number: doubling in five years means about 14.9 percent per year, whatever the path. Companies report revenue CAGRs over product cycles, economists compare countries identically. The formula reverses our compound-interest tools directly: (end/start)^(1/years) minus one.

Limits that count: CAGR hides volatility entirely, equating smooth climbs with roller coasters sharing endpoints. Negative bases break the formula; segment analysis needed then. Whoever projects past CAGRs assumes stable regimes out loud. Smooth numbers summarize; jagged paths decide experiences.

Percentiles: rank without raw points

Percentiles report standing, not points: 90th percentile means beating 90 percent of the comparison group, whatever the absolute scores. Test publishers norm by percentile because raw difficulty wobbles yearly while ranks stay comparable. Growth charts track kids by height and weight percentiles that doctors read as trajectories, not grades.

Misreadings lurk: percentile points differ worlds from percent-correct, and small samples make extreme percentiles unstable. Salary benchmarks quote percentiles where negotiators pin demands. Unis publish admit percentile bands as realistic application help. Rank informs; raw points merely impress.

Sales tax here and abroad

US rates stack state, county, city, and district by address: Chicago cracks 10 percent, Delaware charges zero on most goods. Exemptions punch holes for groceries, clothing thresholds, and inputs, each differently. Online sellers navigate post-Wayfair nexus thresholds state by state. Our calculator adds each rate the moment the address stands.

Origin rules decide by origin vs. destination principle which rate applies. Tax holidays suspend levies on qualifying goods in back-to-school weeks. Audits catch misapplied rates summing over thousands of transactions. Rates vary by address; diligence by care.

Restaurant bill: tax-and-tip order

Standard: tip on the pre-tax sum, then tax on food only: tipping on the after-tax total donates percents no bill deserves. Split bills divide tax proportionally, tip follows individual generosity. Happy-hour discounts deserve full-value tips for identical work.

Auto-tips for big groups follow house rules. Takeout tipping stays modest without service. Delivery apps stack fees that table math never sees. Tip for service, not for taxes.

Real raise: subtract inflation first

Five percent more with four percent inflation buys one percent more groceries - the real raise. Whoever announces nominals bets on money illusion; deflate every offer first, then celebrate. Multi-year compares compound the correction: three and three with four inflation steadily cut buying power. Negotiating tied to CPI plus productivity keeps value honest.

Regional price gaps adjust nominals across cities with different rents. Total comp brings benefits sometimes outgrowing wages. Our change tools compute nominal; inflation tools show real. Celebrate only real raises.

Battery percents lie nonlinearly

Phones drain nonlinearly: the first 10 percent lasts hours, the last 10 vanishes, because voltage curves lie flat mid-range then crash. Savers kick in at 20 percent exactly where worry about real remaining time should start. Makers calibrate displays by coulomb counting that aging steadily degrades.

EVs show buffered percents never truly hitting zero or a hundred, protecting packs invisibly. Laptop estimates swing with load too fast for minute-level trust. Calibrate expectations per full device cycles. Percents indicate; chemistry delivers.

Poll swings and uniform-swing math

Analysts project seats from vote swings by uniform shifts across districts - the classic swingometer arithmetic. Real elections deviate by turnout and regional patterns that point the way. Markets bet implied probabilities that odds tools fluidly convert. Poll averages feed models that graphics departments animate nightly.

New maps reset bases that swing math relearns each cycle. Demographic sorting concentrates votes inefficiently for territory parties. Our change tools compute raw swings; political science interprets them. Swings describe; geography decides.

Batting averages and save rates

Batting averages divide hits by at-bats as three-digit decimals, where .300 shines and .200 struggles; walks stay out, which OBP corrects. Hockey save rates divide saves by shots, where .910 separates starters from backups across eras. Samples stabilize these percents slowly: April leaders fall back, September tables tell truth.

Advanced metrics weight contexts averages ignore: exit velocity, shot quality, and leverage turn raw percents into insight. Contracts pay projected rates instead of past decimals. Fans argue percents; analysts model processes. Denominators define everything.

Memory percents that panic

Warnings pop near 90 percent full, where performance sags and updates fail for lack of room. System categories hide consumption: cache and Other deliberately confuse cleaning. Photo libraries dominate via video, which settings compress aggressively if enabled.

Offloading to cloud moves originals away, keeps thumbnails, frees gigabytes invisibly. Clearing app caches is safe; check documents first. Upgrade math compares tier prices against cloud subs yearly. Percents warn; workflows relieve.

Shooting rates across sports

Basketball shooting splits efficient 60-percent true-shooting stars from volume chuckers; three-point rates reset historical comparisons. Soccer xG models weight shot quality that raw conversion ignores entirely. Hockey shooting luck visibly regresses across seasons; skill stays in shot generation.

Free throws stabilize fastest under controlled conditions - purest shooting-skill signal. Training designs analytically quality attempts. Fans memorize decimals; coaches construct attempts. Good shots beat hot streaks in the end.

Discount framing: dollars vs. percent

Marketing frames sub-100 discounts as percent and luxuries as dollars, because relative thinking dominates small numbers and absolute rules big ones: 20 percent off $40 feels bigger than $8 off, though identical. Experiments confirm: framing moves intent without touching price. Watchdogs police Was-prices inflating fictitious references.

Threshold psychology clusters prices on .99 endings that percents then roundly discount. Loyalty points obscure effective rates behind collect-redeem ratios worth computing. Framing manipulates; arithmetic immunizes.

APR as the unit price of money

Annual rates standardize credit costs across products: cards around 24 percent, mortgages around 7, payday near 400 annualized honestly. Fee-inclusive effective compares expose cheap-rate-plus-fee traps that headlines hide. Our interest tools model every amortization; APR compresses compares into one number.

Teasers reset to standard prices that contracts date precisely; calendar the reset before signing. Variable margins stack on indexes that policy moves unpredictably. Rate literacy saves multiples of any budget tweak.

Alcohol: volume percent and standard drinks

Standard drinks equate 12 oz beer at 5 percent, 5 oz wine at 12 percent, and 1.5 oz spirits at 40 percent at roughly 14 grams of alcohol - the arithmetic behind serving guides. Craft strengths break intuition: double IPAs around 10 percent double counters invisibly.

Tolerance varies with weight, food, fatigue, and meds far beyond gendered tables. Driving limits reference concentrations that drinks-per-hour roughly estimate. Honest tracking beats optimistic memory every weekend. Count grams, not glasses.

Humidity, dew point, and comfort percents

Relative humidity constantly fools: 50 percent at 86 °F holds triple the moisture of 50 percent at 59 °F - which is why dew point predicts comfort better than humidity ever will. ACs dehumidify while cooling, lowering indoor percents while absolute keeps falling. Mold risks climb past sustained 60 percent, whatever the temperature.

Humidifiers ease winter dryness under 30 percent, where skin and sinuses suffer. Hygrometers cost little and calibrate easily by salt test. Comfort lives around 40-50 percent at moderate temperatures. Measure both numbers, trust dew point.

Body metrics in percents

Body-fat percents classify fitness beyond scale: athletic men 10-15 percent, women 18-25; risks climb past 25 and 32. BMI misclassifies muscular builds that fat measurement corrects. Our companion guides detail methods from tape to DEXA.

Hydration percents, muscle shares, and visceral values complete modern composition pictures. Single metrics err; panels inform. Track quarterly, train consistently.

Poll margins and the fine print

Published plus-minus 3 points cover sampling error only; nonresponse and model error contribute invisibly more. Voter screens shift results points by judgment call. Aggregates average house biases while herding correlates errors across pollsters.

Turnout modeling decides modern elections more than persuading shrinking undecideds. Readers should widen mental margins and distrust false-precision seat projections. Margins quantify samples; elections hinge on everything else.

Sales commissions decoded

Plans pay 5-15 percent on revenue or 20-50 on gross by cost structure, with accelerators past quota and brakes on miss. Draws smooth income and create debts that quits collect. Caps protect firms from windfalls and kill motivation at exactly the wrong moment.

Negotiate quota realism harder than rates: impossible quotas at high percents pay less than fair ones at modest. Clawbacks grab commissions on cancels inside windows worth reading. Hit monthly track; sandbagging annualizes badly. Quotas decide pay; rates merely decorate.

Book and music royalties in percents

Publishers pay 10-15 percent of cover on hardcover, 25 percent net on e-books; advances earn out slowly against these rates. Streaming pays fractions of cents per play through label contracts artists warily audit. Self-publishing offers 35-70 percent minus production costs authors carry directly.

Reversions reclaim out-of-print works after decades by copyright. Audiobook splits stack narrators onto royalty towers. Creators should model advances against realistic sales before celebrating. Revenue percents beat exposure promises.

Tariffs as percent taxes

Tariffs levy ad-valorem duties importers substantially pass to consumers: 25 percent steel tariffs measurably price appliances and cars. Supply chains route legally through third countries (and illegally by transshipment fraud) to dodge targeted rates. Retaliation spirals multiply affected goods unpredictably across sectors.

Exclusion processes grant product-specific relief worth petitioning in volume. De-minimis thresholds let micro-shipments duty-free - fuel for cross-border e-commerce. Trade lawyers earn on classifications where single digits decide millions. Border percents reshape baskets.

Down payments that count

Twenty percent down avoids mortgage insurance, while smaller downs trade premiums for earlier ownership: 5 percent down costs roughly 0.5-1 yearly until 20 percent equity cancels. Gift money needs paper trails lenders ruthlessly audit.

Bigger downs shrink monthly loads and total interest and concentrate risk in illiquid equity. Recast options amortize after lump sums without refi costs. Reserves must survive closings consuming down payments. Signature percents echo decades.

The 15-percent retirement rule tested

Popularized: 15 percent of income from 25 for secure retirement incl. employer match - compounds roughly ten times final salary by 67 under historic returns. Late starters need 20-30 percent offsetting lost decades; early aggressive savers can coast after coast numbers. Rules assume continuous employment and average markets that individual lives regularly break.

High earners need lower percents thanks to progressive pensions; low earners higher against fixed costs. Automate percents before lifestyle absorbs raises. Fifteen opens discussion; math closes it.

50/30/20 budgets in practice

Popularized: after-tax income into needs, wants, saving at 50/30/20 - which pricey cities instantly break on housing. Adjustments shift ratios to local realities: 60/20/20 or 70/20/10 where rents swallow halves. One month of real tracking reveals true splits that budgets then gradually nudge.

Zero-based budgeting assigns every dollar jobs instead of capping categories - for detail fans bored by 50/30/20. Pay-yourself-first automates saving before wants compete. Percents guide; automation delivers.

Emergency fund without dogma

Three to six months of essential spending cover most job losses: dual-income stability around three, freelancers six-plus. A $1,000 starter absorbs car repairs and dental bills that would otherwise become card debt. High deductibles argue bigger buffers explicitly covering maxima.

Where the fund lives matters: liquid for immediacy, laddered short terms for bigger buffers with more yield. After draws refill immediately before lifestyle expands. Funds buy options that debt destroys. Size honestly, fill automatically.

Market-share math that misleads

Market-share percents hide market-definition decisions crowning winners before counting: smartphones vs. all phones, streaming vs. all viewing, EVs vs. all cars. Sellers define categories conveniently, analysts neutrally aside.

Growing shares of shrinking markets signal decline; shrinking shares of booming markets success. Concentration ratios sum top-firm shares for competition verdicts: ratios of four over 60 flag oligopolies watchdogs watch. Define markets first, then count.

Splitting the check five ways

Five friends, one bill, two shared starters, one abstainer - the classic table standoff. Percents mediate: everyone pays their own plus equal shares of shared, tax and tip cut proportionally. The abstainer only eats; nobody subsidizes skipped wine.

Run shares once at table and screenshot the split. Receipts end debates.

Real raise

Four percent more with five percent inflation is a pay cut in good news. Subtract inflation from nominal to reveal real change before signing. Multi-year offers compound the gap quietly, so annualize every number.

Convert all offers to today-dollars, then compare. Nominal flatters, real informs.

Battery triage

Twenty percent with maps running means roughly forty minutes, not two hours. Listing consumers by percent in settings shows display plus GPS at three quarters combined. Saver mode buys the missing quarter to the outlet.

Check per-app percents monthly and remove idle guzzlers. Percents diagnose silently.

Grades from raw points

Students turn 42 of 50 into 84 percent in seconds and check grade cutoffs. Weighting categories before averaging stops homework outweighing finals. Weekly running percents erase endgame surprises.

Track weekly running percent; cutoffs never surprise trackers.

Roommate shares without fights

Roommates split asymmetric rooms by percent of total rent, not equal chunks. Utilities follow presence days when traveling. Written shares reviewed yearly prevent creeping resentment.

Fix room percents in writing and review yearly. Writing prevents rot.

Discounts like pros

Two percent ten-days sounds small; annualized it is over 36 percent return on cash deployed - which is why firms take discounts almost always and privates almost never. Whoever blows the deadline gifts the highest safe rate of the year. Discount windows belong in every payment routine, not the drawer.

At home the same with contractor bills carrying discount lines: rather overdraft ten days than leave two percent. Discount beats almost any investment rate.

Gross-net in your head

Taking nineteen percent OFF is dividing by 1.19, not subtracting 19 percent: 119 gross are 100 net, not 96.39. The error costs money at every receipt check. Motto: removing is dividing, adding is multiplying.

For 7 percent (groceries, books) the same mechanism with 1.07. With both divisors in your head you check every receipt in seconds.

Overdraft vs. installment loan honestly compared

Overdraft rates around 10-12 percent look harmless until annualized against installment loans around 6-8 percent: on $5,000 over two years both worlds differ by several hundred dollars. Overdraft is the priciest convenient credit of everyday life.

Rule: overdraft for days, installment for months, refinance once overdraft becomes permanent. Percents decide, convenience costs.

Reading unit prices at the store

XXL packs with "30 % more content" often cost more per 100 grams than the regular size on sale - only the shelf unit price reveals truth. Percent promises without reference are ads, not information. Two seconds of unit-price compare beats any percent ad.

Bait offers ("only this week −30 %") work because nobody knows last week\u2019s price. Whoever collects receipts or photographs prices dispels the trick. Distrust percents without base.

Negotiating salary with bands

Demanding "10 to 15 percent more" instead of a sum anchors the negotiation high and leaves room: the upper band becomes anchor, the lower a felt floor. HR thinks in bands and budgets, not wishes.

Allowances in percent on base beat one-offs, because they base all following years, overtime, and bonuses. One-offs fizzle, percents keep compounding. Negotiate rates, not sums.

Reading daily rates right

Four percent promo for three months sounds better than 3.5 percent permanent - annualized to balance and year the lower permanent often wins. Banks price promo rates as bait, existing customers stare into the tube. Compounding frequency (monthly vs. yearly) shifts decimals, duration decides.

Normalize everything to twelve months and full balance, then compare. Annualize baits, honor permanents.

Negotiating cars in percent

Ten percent off $40,000 is $4,000 of mass - whoever thinks in dollars instead of percent negotiates braver. Dealers give stingy in percent what would be four figures in dollars. List minus target divided by list: the number dispels every "great deal".

Demos and loaners carry 15-25 percent discounts that list-price thinking normalizes. Set target percent first, then pit dealers against each other. Percents unmask, dollars decide.

Marginal bracket understood

More gross is not proportionally more net: each extra dollar loads at the marginal rate rising with income. Overtime pays almost always - just at the marginal, not average, rate. "Not worth it because taxes" is almost always wrong.

Bracket moves, allowances, and pension contributions shift effective rates noticeably. Gross calculators never lie, interpretations do. Think marginal, not gut.

Step-by-step walkthrough

Example 1: sale price

  1. Jacket $80, 25 % off. Convert: 25 % = 0.25.
  2. Discount = 0.25 × 80 = $20.
  3. Pay 80 − 20 = $60. Shortcut: pay 75 %, i.e. 0.75 × 80 = $60 directly.
  4. Sanity check in the table below: the 25 % row confirms 20 per 80.

Example 2: grade share

  1. 30 points on a 200-point exam? Share = 30 ÷ 200 × 100.
  2. 30 ÷ 200 = 0.15 → 15 %.
  3. Reading: below typical pass cutoffs - grade mapping in the grades guide.

Example 3: rent hike

  1. Rent 50 → 65. Difference = 15.
  2. Divide by the OLD value: 15 ÷ 50 = 0.30.
  3. Result +30 %. Rule: the base is always the starting number, never the new one.

Frequently asked questions

What is 20 % of 150?

20 % = 0.20. 0.20 × 150 = 30. Rule: "of" means ×. Fast check without calculator: 10 % of 150 = 15, double = 30. The full tables above list every percent so you can see it.

What is 15 % of 200?

15 % = 0.15. 0.15 × 200 = 30. Trick: 10 % (20) + 5 % (10) = 30 - no calculator needed.

30 is what % of 200?

Divide the part by the whole: 30 ÷ 200 = 0.15 → ×100 = 15 %. Memory rule: the number after "of" is always the divisor.

What is the percent change from 50 to 65?

Difference 15 ÷ old value 50 = 0.30 → +30 %. Rule: the base is always the starting number (the "from" number).

Price 80 down to 60 - how many % off?

20 ÷ 80 = 0.25 → −25 %. The result reads: a quarter off.

How do I calculate reverse percent (was 48 after 20 % off)?

Divide by the remaining share: 48 ÷ 0.80 = $60. General: undo "−p %" by ÷(1 − p/100). Classically: search backward percent in the calculator above.

20 % off then 10 % off - how much total?

Multiply: 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72 → 28 % off, NOT 30 %. Percents multiply; they never add.

100 plus 20 % then minus 20 % = 100?

No: 100 → 120 → minus 20 % = $96. Undoing ×1.2 means ÷1.2 (= ×0.8333). Asymmetry in action.

How much tip on $60 at 15 %?

15 % of 60 = $9. Fast: 10 % ($6) + 5 % ($3). Shares in the tip calculator above.

$200 with 8 % tax - total?

$200 × 1.08 = $216. The 1.08 shortcut multiplies in one step.

What is 7 % of 250?

0.07 × 250 = $17.50. Real: sales/state tax on $250.

45 is what % of 90?

45 ÷ 90 = 0.5 → 50 %. Reads instantly: half.

What is 10 % of 1,000?

$100. Move the point: 10 % = ÷10.

66 is what % of 300?

66 ÷ 300 = 0.22 → 22 %. See row in the tables above.

200 down to 150 - change in %?

−50 ÷ 200 = −0.25 → −25 %. A quarter less.

Add 8 % to 120?

120 × 1.08 = $129.60. 1.08 bundles adding.

60 with 20 % off?

60 × 0.80 = $48. 0.80 is the pay-share.

30 and 45: what % savings?

Discount 15 ÷ 45 = 0.3333 → 33.3 % off. Pay the rest ($30).

$120 minus 15 % what remains?

120 × 0.85 = $102. Remainder trick: 100 − 15 = 85 %.

25 % of 80?

0.25 × 80 = $20. A quarter rule.

What % is the tip on $50 at 20 %?

$10 - a fifth. Total $60.

Sales tax vs. VAT - difference?

Same math (×1.rate), other name: EU bakes VAT into prices (gross), US adds sales tax on top (net). EU receipt = reverse: ÷1.19 at 19 % VAT.

How do I compute gross to net at 19 %?

Gross ÷ 1.19. $119 gross = $100 net - NOT $96.39 (minus 19 % would be wrong). Removing = dividing.

And at 7 % (groceries, books)?

Gross ÷ 1.07. $107 gross = $100 net.

$5,000 with 3 % interest?

$150. Per year. Over years compounding decides.

3 % of one million?

$30,000. 1 % of a million = $10,000 - scale line.

0.5 % as decimal?

0.005. Two left: 0.5 % → 0.005. Half a percent of 1,000 = $5.

2.5 as percent?

2.5 × 100 = 250 %. Values over 1 exceed 100 %.

What is 1 % of 500?

$5. 1 % = ÷100.

What is 5 % of 300?

$15. Half of 10 % ($30).

33 % of 90?

$29.70. Near a third ($30) - deliberately just under.

75 % of 200?

$150. Three quarters rule.

12.5 % of 800?

$100. An eighth.

0 % change possible?

Yes - new = old: (x−x) ÷ x = 0. Stagnation as number.

100 % increase = double?

Exactly: ×2. 200 % increase = triple (×3).

50 % decrease = half?

Exactly: ×0.5. 100 % decrease = zero.

What are percentage points?

Absolute gap between rates: 10 % → 12 % = +2 points, but +20 % relative.

Rate 3 % to 4 % - increase?

+1 point, but +33.3 % relative. Both true - context decides which you quote.

Polls +3 - points or percent?

Points. 40 % → 43 % is +3 points (+7.5 % relative) - reported as points.

How much is the 50/30/20 budget?

Needs/wants/saving split of after-tax income. Rough target, not law.

15 % retirement rule - what?

Save 15 % from ~25 for secure retirement. Late starter needs more.

2 % early-pay discount annualized?
