Two measurement worlds collide daily: metric (millimeters to kilometers) and imperial (inches to miles). The bridge is exact: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, by international definition since 1959. Convert either direction above, then use the full conversion matrix and everyday references below - from paper sizes to marathon distances.

How to use the Length Converter

  1. Enter the value.
  2. Choose from- and to-units.
  3. Read the result - matrices below cover the classics.

Formula

1 in = 2.54 cm  ·  1 ft = 30.48 cm  ·  1 yd = 0.9144 m  ·  1 mi = 1.609344 km

Key concepts, explained

Why 2.54 is exact

In 1959 the inch was DEFINED as 25.4 mm, ending centuries of drift. Conversions are therefore exact arithmetic, not measurements - every digit here is certain.

Choosing sensible units

Machining: mm or thou. Human height: cm or ft/in. Road: km or mi. Land: m or ft. Right-sizing units prevents silly errors (a “2 m” person vs “200 cm” is the same - but “2 cm” is a typo that unit sense catches).

Surveyors keep old units alive

Gunter chain of 1620: 22 yards = 66 ft = 20.1168 m exactly. Ten chains make a furlong (201.168 m); eight furlongs make a mile. Cricket pitches still measure 22 yards for this reason.

Area follows: ten square chains = one acre (4,046.86 m²). Old deeds in chains convert cleanly - multiply chains by 20.1168 for meters.

Paper sizes keep one ratio when halved

A0 holds exactly one square meter with sides in ratio 1 to about 1.4142. Every fold halves the area and keeps the ratio, so A4 (210 × 297 mm) enlarges to A3 without distortion.

B sizes split the difference between A steps; US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) matches neither - check printer trays before assuming.

Screen inches hide real size

Inches quote the diagonal only. A 55 in 16:9 panel spans about 47.9 × 27.0 in - divide 55 by 18.36 (the 16:9 diagonal factor), then multiply by 16 and 9.

Same diagonal, different area: a 4:3 screen of 55 in shows less than a 16:9 one. Compare width × height, never diagonal alone.

Nautical miles for sea and sky

One nautical mile = 1,852 m exactly: one minute of latitude. Speeds follow - one knot is one nautical mile per hour (1.852 km/h).

Cables divide the mile into tenths (185.2 m) for anchoring and short ranges. Aviation altitudes use feet worldwide, with meters in China and Russia.

Typography lives in points

One PostScript point = 1/72 inch = 0.3528 mm exactly. Twelve points make a pica; 72-point type stands one inch tall.

Screen CSS simplified further: 1px equals 1/96 inch, so 12-pt text renders at 16 px. Print designers convert; web designers rarely must.

Astronomical distances need bigger rulers

One AU (Earth-Sun mean distance) = 149,597,870.7 km. Light crosses it in about 8 minutes 20 seconds.

A light-year spans about 9.46 trillion km; a parsec equals about 3.26 light-years from parallax geometry. Backyard telescopes top out in light-years; galaxies demand megaparsecs.

Clothing sizes convert badly

US, UK, EU and JP systems disagree by garment, brand and even year - a US size 8 dress runs near a UK 12 and EU 38, but check charts. Measure chest, waist and hips in cm or inches instead.

Shoes convert cleaner: a US men size 9 foot runs about 27 cm, near UK 8 and EU 42-43. Feet swell through the day, so measure in the evening.

Metric prefixes climb by tens

Milli means ÷1000, centi ÷100, kilo ×1000: 25 mm = 2.5 cm = 0.025 m. Slide the decimal instead of memorizing factors.

Imperial climbs unevenly: 12 in = 1 ft, 3 ft = 1 yd, 1,760 yd = 1 mi. Write the chain down once and reuse it.

Maps shrink the world by scale

A 1:25,000 map turns 1 cm into 250 m on the ground; 1:50,000 doubles that to 500 m per cm. Four square cm on 1:50,000 equal one square km.

Print scaling breaks stated ratios - verify against the printed bar scale, never the ratio alone, after resizing.

Feet and inches divide labor

Feet carry room dimensions, ceilings and human height; inches carry tools, screens and rainfall. Mixing them mid-project causes the classic 5.10 ft misread - five foot ten is 70 inches, while 5.10 decimal feet is barely 61.

Fabric and paper go metric even in America: 54-inch upholstery bolts convert to 137.16 cm, and photo prints jump between 4×6 in and 10×15 cm trays.

Running races straddle both systems

Track runs metric (100 m, 1,500 m, 10,000 m) while American road races sell miles: 5K, 10K, half-marathon 13.1, marathon 26.2. Convert training paces or blow up at mile 20.

Marathon qualifying times assume the full 42.195 km - a 26-mile training run still leaves 385 yards untested. That final stretch decides races.

How surveyors measure long distances reliably

Modern surveyors rarely stretch tapes across fields. Total stations combine angle measurement with laser distance, fixing points to millimeters over hundreds of meters. For longer baselines, differential GPS compares signals between a known base and a rover, canceling most atmospheric error. The workflow matters more than any single device: control points first, detail points second, always closing loops so mistakes show up as misclosures instead of hiding in the data.

Old tools still teach the logic. Steel tapes correct for temperature, tension and sag through small tables that beginners find tedious until their first closure fails. Pacing and stadia hairs give rough checks that catch blunders like swapped digits. Our converter handles the unit math once fieldwork produces numbers; good control networks make those numbers worth converting.

Nautical miles and knots where they come from

A nautical mile equals one minute of latitude, about 1,852 meters, which made chart work practical long before calculators: dividers stepped minutes straight off the margin scale. Knots as nautical miles per hour follow naturally, so a 20-knot ship covers 20 minutes of latitude per hour in still water. Aviation kept the same units because weather charts and great-circle planning share marine roots.

The definition is now fixed in meters exactly, but the geometry behind it still helps. A degree of latitude spans 60 nautical miles everywhere, while longitude degrees shrink toward the poles. Sailors converting trip plans should keep paper-chart intuition alongside GPS readouts. Use our converter for the arithmetic and keep the latitude trick as a sanity check.

Astronomical units, light-years and parsecs in plain language

Astronomers reach for units that keep numbers readable. The astronomical unit pegs Earth-Sun distance near 149.6 million km, handy inside the solar system. Light-years suit interstellar talk because they tie distance to travel time at the one speed everyone knows. Parsecs come from parallax geometry: one parsec is the distance showing one arcsecond of shift against a one-AU baseline.

Conversions between them are exact by definition, so our calculator never introduces rounding beyond display precision. The conceptual jump matters more: AU for orbits, light-years for public outreach, parsecs for research papers. Pick the unit your audience already pictures, then convert once at the end instead of mixing systems mid-paragraph.

PCB traces and machining in mils without confusion

American machine shops still quote thousandths of an inch as mils or thou, so a 10-mil trace measures 0.254 mm. The trap is the other mil meaning millimeter in casual speech, plus the metric mil confusion in textiles. Serious shops write 0.010 in or 0.25 mm explicitly on drawings that matter.

For quick mental work, remember 40 mils per millimeter almost exactly, and 1 mil as roughly a quarter of a human hair width. PCB designers standardize on mil grids for imperial parts and metric grids for dense packages, converting at export. Keep our converter open during footprint work and confirm the unit suffix on every vendor table.

Body measurements and clothing sizes across systems

Shirts, inseams and bra bands convert messily because sizing adds ease, vanity and brand drift on top of raw length. A 32-inch inseam seldom measures exactly 32 inches on the finished garment. Tailors therefore work from body measurements plus explicit ease instead of label sizes.

The practical approach is measuring twice with the same tape: chest at fullest point, waist at navel height for trousers, hips at widest point, all with two fingers of slack. Convert those numbers once, then compare against each brand size chart rather than assuming consistency. Our converter handles inches to centimeters; fit still needs trying on.

Hiking distances: pacing and Naismith with judgment

Walkers estimate distance by counting double paces over known 100-meter stretches, then adjusting for slope and ground. Naismith rule adds 30 minutes per 300 meters of climb on top of base pace near 12 minutes per kilometer for fit groups. None of this replaces maps, but it catches wrong-turn errors hours before GPS batteries die.

Trail signs round generously and phone GPS wanders under tree cover, so cross-check all three sources. Mark waypoints at junctions with times, not just distances, because speed varies more than route length. Convert map scales once at planning, then walk by time and pace in the field.

Furlongs, chains and heritage units still in use

Horse racing still runs in furlongs, eighths of a mile near 201 meters, because pedigrees and track records span centuries in those units. Surveyors meet chains and rods in old deeds where a chain spans 66 feet and ten square chains make an acre. Farmland descriptions in several countries still chain-link modern GPS surveys to these boundaries.

Converting heritage documents needs care with which foot or mile applied at the time: US survey feet differ from international feet by two parts per million, enough to shift long boundaries. Convert with the historically correct factor, record which one was used, and keep original wording next to modern equivalents. Our converter covers standard factors; deed work adds archival judgment.

Calipers, micrometers and reading small lengths honestly

Vernier calipers read to 0.02 mm or a thou with technique, while micrometers reach 0.01 mm when ratchets click consistently and anvils stay clean. The common failure is measuring force: squeezing plastics or warm parts changes readings more than instrument resolution. Zero-check jaws closed before every session and wipe measuring faces first.

Digital readouts tempt false precision, so round shop measurements to the tolerance the job actually needs. Wood moves with humidity more than most caliper debates. Record the tool plus temperature for close fits, convert units once at the end, and cut test pieces before final stock.

Map scales and real-world distances without slips

A 1:25,000 map turns 4 cm into exactly 1 km, while 1:50,000 halves detail and doubles ground per centimeter. Phone maps hide scales behind pinch zoom, which is why serious route cards note scale plus issue date. Photocopied maps betray users because enlarge-to-fit silently changes every distance.

The reliable workflow is reading the printed scale bar rather than trusting the stated ratio, then converting with our tool and adding ascent separately. Grid references locate points; scale bars size legs. Do the conversion at the kitchen table where mistakes cost eraser dust instead of daylight.

Shoe sizes in millimeters that actually fit

Mondopoint sizing stamps foot length in millimeters straight on the shoe, skipping the US, UK and EU translation lottery. Measure feet in the evening standing with weight loaded, heel to longest toe, then add 5 to 10 mm of wiggle room for walking. Running shoes want the upper end of that range because feet swell with heat and distance.

Size charts vary between brands even at identical millimeter labels, so compare the specific chart of the model being bought. Try shoes with the socks planned for use and check thumb width at the longest toe. Our converter translates legacy sizes once, but millimeters decide comfort.

Bicycle fit from inseam without guesswork

Frame sizing starts with true inseam measured barefoot against a wall, book spine pressed firmly upward. Road frames multiply inseam by 0.67 for a workable center-to-top-tube figure, while mountain and gravel geometries need stack and reach tables rather than seat-tube rules. Standover clearance of a few centimeters matters more than any formula for confidence in traffic.

Online calculators disagree because they assume different riding postures, so treat results as a shortlist for test rides. Saddle height then sets from roughly 0.883 times inseam to pedal spindle, fine-tuned by knee comfort. Convert once, then ride before buying.

Curtains and blinds measured to fit first time

Curtain width needs 1.5 to 2 times the track width for folds that look full rather than stretched flat. Length decisions split tastes: sill length for kitchens, floor-kissing for living rooms, puddling only where cleaning tolerance allows. Inside-mount blinds need the narrowest of three width measurements (top, middle, bottom) minus the maker small deduction.

Steel tapes beat cloth tapes for spans over a meter because fabric stretches with mood. Record width by height plus mount type on every window, photograph the window with the tape visible, and convert once at ordering. Rechecks take minutes; remakes take weeks.

Rug sizes and room proportions that look right

Living-room rugs should slide under front legs of all seating, which usually means 160 by 230 cm or larger rather than the postage stamps shops push. Dining rugs need 60 to 80 cm of extra table length per side so chairs stay on fabric when pulled out. Bedrooms place runners or large rugs extending past the bed sides where cold feet land.

Tape the outline on the floor with painter tape and live with it a day before ordering. Patterns hide wear while plain weaves show every crumb. Convert room measurements once, then buy the largest rug the budget and doors allow.

TV size and viewing distance without regret

Viewing distance near 1.5 to 2.5 times screen diagonal suits mixed TV use, closer for cinema immersion and farther for newsrooms with wide seating. A 55-inch screen spans about 122 cm wide, so measure wall plus furniture clearance before falling for showroom scale. Resolution matters less than size at typical sofa distances.

Mounting height centers the screen at seated eye level, roughly 100 to 110 cm to screen center for most sofas. Check door swing, window glare at evening hours, and cable routes before drilling. Convert diagonals once, then tape the rectangle on the wall overnight.

Bolt lengths and thread pitch without mistakes

Metric bolts name diameter by pitch, like M8 by 1.25, where the second number is millimeters per thread and decides compatibility absolutely. Length measures from under the head to the tip for most styles, excluding the head itself. A caliper plus a pitch gauge removes all guessing in seconds.

Imperial bolts add threads-per-inch confusion, so count threads over a quarter inch and multiply by four before converting. When replacing unknown fasteners, bring the old part to the shop and test nuts by hand rather than trusting memory. Our converter translates lengths; pitch gauges settle fit.

Wallpaper rolls and wall coverage without waste

Wallpaper math starts with wall perimeter times height, minus generous allowances for doors and windows that pattern matching partly eats back. Rolls list usable coverage near 5 square meters, but large repeats waste 20 percent or more on every drop. Measure each wall separately because old houses slope and bulge beyond nominal plans.

Order one spare roll from the same batch number since dye lots drift visibly between printings. Keep offcuts for future patches behind radiators and doors. Convert wall lengths once, then round up without apology.

Fence posts, spacing and honest concrete math

Post spacing near 2.4 to 2.7 meters balances lumber lengths against wind load without sagging rails. Hole depth should bury one third of post length with gravel drainage below concrete that slopes away from timber at the top. String lines plus batter boards keep runs straight where eyes alone wander.

Concrete bags convert to holes through volume math: a 40 kg bag fills roughly 20 liters, and typical post holes want one to two bags each. Brace corner and gate posts doubly because gates rack everything loose within a season. Measure the run once, then dig every hole to full depth.
