Date minus date sounds easy until leap years and month lengths arrive: one month after January 31 is February 28 (or 29th) - true calendar arithmetic counts correctly. The calculator above gives years, months, days plus total days: the same math behind deadlines, anniversaries, and thresholds. But age is also law: driving, voting, drinking, retiring - every milestone hangs on exact-date age. This guide covers the calendar mechanics plus every American age limit that matters, from learner permits to required distributions. Because birthdays are parties, but exact age is paperwork.

How to use the Age Calculator

  1. Pick the birth date.
  2. Optionally set age-on for past/future dates.
  3. Read years/months/days plus total days.

Formula

True calendar difference incl. leap years (no 365-day approximation)  ·  leap = div by 4 except centuries not div by 400

Key concepts, explained

Exact age: calendar arithmetic

Date minus date sounds easy until leap years and month lengths arrive: one month after January 31 is February 28 (or 29th) - true calendar arithmetic counts correctly. The calculator above gives years, months, days plus total days: the same math behind deadlines, anniversaries, and thresholds.

Contracts often define month calendrically from dates: March 15 plus one month is April 15, not 30 days. Day-count conventions (30/360 vs. actual!) read separately. Count calendars, distrust approximations.

Leap years: div 4, except century, except div 400

Leap when divisible by 4, EXCEPT by 100 (no!), EXCEPT by 400 (yes!): 2000 was, 1900 was not, 2100 will not be. The rule saves date math across centuries. Next skipped: 2100 - calendar apps cope, now you do too.

Leap seconds (irregular, Earth rotation!) concern atomic clocks and markets - never birthdays. Feb-29 babies: 1-in-1,461 statistics. Remember the rule, celebrate the kids.

Feb-29 birthdays legally

In common years: party February 28 or March 1 - legally turning on Feb 28 at midnight in most states (practice varies by jurisdiction!). Agencies (ID, licenses) usually count Feb 28. Celebrating both days is allowed - gifts do not double.

Eighteenth birthdays of 2008 leaplings: adult February 28, 2026 in practice. Clarify age-clause contracts early. Know practice, celebrate twice.

Total days and the 10,000-day milestone

Total days (counted from a fixed zero!) make age concrete: 30 years is about 10,950 plus 7-8 leaps. Ten thousand days lands near 27.4 years - a party worthier than round birthdays! Milestones (100th birthdays, 10,000-day parties) need day precision.

Anniversaries count full elapsed years: weddings start year one (1st anniversary is one full year!). Companies celebrate founding plus days. Count days, celebrate milestones.

Driver license ages by state

Permits at 15-16, restricted licenses 16-17, full at 18 (rules vary!): graduated steps save lives. Motorcycle tiers dose power by age. REAL ID or passports required for flights now.

CDL commercial licenses demand 21 for interstate. Senior renewal cycles shorten with age (vision tests!). Exploit tiers, mind deadlines.

Voting 18, offices 25/30/35

Vote from 18 (deadline is election day - be 18 BY then!). House at 25, Senate 30, President 35! State offices mostly 18 (candidacy 18+!). First-timers: check precincts, time absentee ballots.

Mayors and governors from 18 (no degrees!). Referendum thresholds mirror elections. Check deadlines, time ballots.

Adulthood 18: checklist

Contracts solo (phones, leases, loans!), moving without consent, full accounts, voting, organ-donor choice: from 18 everything is your own liability. Duties run parallel: tax returns, insurance (your own auto!), draft registration.

Paperwork from 18: powers of attorney (parents lose account access!), will-thinking (later!). New POAs, verified insurance.

Juvenile justice to 18/21

Under 18: juvenile courts (rehabilitation!), tried as adults for grave crimes in most states (transfer laws!). Records sealable - expungement timelines tracked. Traffic offenses land there too.

Age of criminal responsibility floors vary by state (as low as 10!). Know thresholds, track timelines.

Alcohol 21, tobacco 21

Beer, wine, spirits from 21, tobacco and vapes from 21 federally: sales plus public possession regulated. Stings (secret shoppers!) cost licenses. Fake IDs bring criminal records, not just confiscation.

Cannabis 21 where legal (state-legal only!). Ratings (R movies 17+) parallel. Know thresholds, carry ID.

Marriage 18 with state exceptions

Marriage from 18; most states allow 16-17 with parental/judicial consent (rules vary!). Common-law states recognize informal unions. Name changes at marriage: hyphenations and new surnames - courts advise. Divorce only by courts.

Prenups before weddings (separate property!): notaries. Decide, know deadlines.

School start: cutoff dates

Kindergarten cutoffs cluster September 1 (state-dependent!): August birthdays face hold-back choices. Missing the cohort means waiting a year - time moves carefully! Redshirting debated: oldest versus youngest effects studied.

Homeschooling by state notice (affidavits!). Attendance: truancy reaches family courts! Check deadlines, time applications.

College, FAFSA, aid to 24

FAFSA dependency to 24 (parent data!): grants, loans, work-study hinge on it. Application opens October 1 yearly - file early, aid runs out! Merit plus need stack; deadlines sacred.

Community-college transfers halve costs; 529s compound tax-free for education. Know thresholds, file early.

Retirement: full age 66-67 staggered

Full retirement age steps 66 to 67 by birth year: 1960+ at 67. Forty credits (10 years work!) qualify. File 3 months early (short back-pay!). Earnings tests before FRA withhold partially.

Working in retirement: benefits recalculated with new earnings. Spousal and survivor add-ons modeled. Verify earnings records, time filing.

Early retirement: reductions math

Claiming at 62 cuts roughly 30 percent for life versus 70 boosting 24 percent past full - timing dwarfs market returns. 401(k) withdrawals penalty-free at 59.5 (55 with separation!). Roth ladders bridge early years.

Health coverage gaps before Medicare dominate early-retirement math. Part-time bridges preserve sanity and cash. Model reductions, bridge gaps.

Unemployment: duration by state

Usually 26 weeks (base-period earnings qualify!), extended in recessions: age never extends federally. Refusing suitable work ends benefits. Register promptly after layoff (delays cut!). Habitual offer-rejection means disqualification!

Work-search logs audited; gig earnings reported. Partial benefits while part-time working. Keep deadlines, avoid refusals.

At-will notice: custom decides

Two weeks notice (custom, not law!), no notice required either side: tenure never protects legally. WARN Act demands 60 days for mass layoffs (100+ workers!). Contracts and CBAs override defaults.

Final paychecks timed by state law (immediately to next payday!). Non-competes bind post-exit - read before signing. Know customs, mind statutes.

Probation, contracts, parental leave

Introductory periods (90 days typical, benefits delayed!), contracts at-will default, FMLA 12 unpaid weeks (50+ employers, 1,250 hours!). Paid family leave exists in growing states - stack with employer top-ups. Protection during pregnancy and leave (strong!).

Vacation accrues (first year pro-rata!). Parental beyond FMLA negotiated. Keep deadlines, file requests.

Child support, custody tables

Guidelines by state (income shares!): support to 18 (21 in school states!). College contributions court-ordered sometimes. Modification on income shifts (file, never self-adjust!). Enforcement: wage garnishment, license suspension, contempt.

Custody best-interests factors documented. Parenting plans calendared. File motions, track payments.

Vacation: no federal minimum

Zero statutory days - 10-15 typical, 20+ with tenure: negotiate at hiring (only chance!). Use-or-lose policies forfeit December balances. Payout at exit varies by state!

Sick leave mandated in growing states (accrual 1:30!). Parental plus vacation stacked strategically. Negotiate entry, spend yearly.

ID and passport: 10 and 5 years

Passports: 10 years adults, 5 children (fees ~$130/$135!). Apply in person for firsts (acceptance facilities!), renew by mail. Expired = travel bans (no grace!).

Expedited in weeks (urgent travel days!). Report losses (invalidation!). Calendar deadlines, check fees.

REAL ID for domestic flights

Enforcement now: licenses need gold stars for TSA (passports substitute!). DMV visits with birth certificates, SS cards, two residencies. Non-compliant licenses still drive - just never fly.

Global Entry includes PreCheck plus fast customs. Renewals timed before trips. Verify status, book appointments.

Inspections, points, probation

State inspections (safety/emissions by state!), new-car grace periods, then periodic (stickers!). Points per violation accumulate to suspension - traffic school erases. Lapses cost surcharges.

Generations: Boomer to Alpha

Pew scale: Boomers 46-64, X 65-80, Millennials 81-96, Z 97-2012, Alpha 2013+ (edges debated!). Marketing drawers, not laws of nature: 1980 straddles X and Millennial. Workplace generational lenses (understand values, never judge!).

Demographic waves: Boomer retirements tear staffing gaps (55-65 cohorts!). Z in markets (meaning, flexibility!). Ignore edges, see humans.

Life expectancy: conditional higher

Newborns: ~76/~81 (US!); conditional at 65 plus 18/21 more years (who reaches 65 reaches 83/86!). Period tables (snapshots!) vs. cohorts (your birth year lives longer - progress!). Income stretches 5-10 years (education/health!).

Plan retirements longer (90+ counted!). Care after 80 likely (powers of attorney!). Count conditionally, write POAs.

Dog years: 7x is myth

True math: logarithmic methylation clocks - size dominates lifespan doubly (Chihuahuas 16, Danes 8!). Rule: dog-year one is 15, year two is 9, then 4-5 yearly (giants 6-7!).

Insurers and vets count exact dates (records!): vaccine schedules by age. Senior food from 7-8 (giants earlier!). Vaccinate, weigh, adjust.

Leap rules (above!) hold Gregorian stable (1-day error per 3,000 years!). Historical math: verify country and year of switch. Know drift, check countries.

Weekday in your head (Doomsday roughly)

Doomsday method: fixed dates (4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12, last February!) fall yearly on the same weekday - remember year anchors, compute. Anchor 2026: Friday. Practice makes (5 minutes per date once skilled!).
